Step 5: What to Read and Research

The ‘Read This’ section of Step 5 continues to prepare you for exposure to college coaches. Now that you are reaching out to schools and putting yourself on the radar of coaches, you’ll want to make sure you know exactly what coaches are looking for and evaluating. The resources under ‘Read This’ for Step 5 will:

  • Give you valuable advice from those who have successfully navigated the recruiting process
  • Help you understand how to impress college coaches on and off the field
  • Continue to give you important advice on the best practices for contacting, communicating, and interacting with college coaches
  • Explain different ways you can create exposure without breaking the bank and overspending

And much more.

We’ve boiled the ‘Read This’ section down to the essentials, but as you’ve already figured out, there is a lot to know.  Step 5 is all about maximizing your opportunities. You’ve spent a long time being patient and waiting until you were ready to seek exposure, and now it’s time to show coaches what you’ve got. Remember, the resources in this section come from college coaches and college players, so you’ll want to read carefully.

In addition to the articles in ‘Read This’, you’ll want to start thoroughly researching the schools that express interest and think about what you will do if you hear from new or unknown programs. In the early stages, it’s helpful to reach out and consider lots of schools. Think about what questions you want answered and begin to prepare for more serious discussions with college coaches. Use the search tool in the upper right corner to search more detailed questions you have. The Categories search tool in the side bar is another great way to explore Step 5 topics in depth.
