Creating a Successful DIY Recruiting Video

Question 1: True

Explanation:
This is True! Coaches like to see your approach to the play as well as the play itself. Everything you show is giving coaches a piece of the puzzle. A clip that starts late or ends early doesn’t provide the complete picture. Take a ground ball for example. If you start the clip late, the coach misses your pre-pitch prep step as well as your first-step quickness, reaction time, and ability to close on a ball. If you cut off your throw at the end, the coach misses key pieces of your throwing pattern, direction, and momentum. For hitting or pitching, it’s the same thing. While you don’t want to have a lot of dead time between clips, you also don’t want to leave the play without context or have multiple clips blend together. It’s okay to have a few seconds between action to give coaches a peek at your process and preparation. Look at our sample video in chapter 6 for more insight into appropriate length of time between clips.

Question 2: False

Explanation:
This is false! A stable (non-moving) camera angle is critical for allowing coaches to get information from a repetition. When the camera moves, it’s difficult for coaches to tell how the player is moving through space and acts as a form of manipulation that interferes with a coach’s ability to evaluate mechanics and performance.

Question 3: False

Explanation:
This is false! Camera angles and distance are very important to the quality of your recruiting video. While you don’t have control over the angles and distance for game footage, you do control these variables when filming the skills portion of your video. This is why we suggest including video from a training or practice session, which you can film on your own from close range and with multiple angles. Having this view and whatever game footage you can collect is a great mix.
